OSB Roof Sheathing

OSB roof sheathing is the most popular choice for sheathing today. It's made of wood chips and strips that are compressed together to form a flat 7/16" sheet.


OSB stands for Oriented Strand Board, and it is an engineered wood panel similar to plywood - the major difference here is how it's made. OSB is made up of wood strands 8-15 cm long, that are then mixed with resin and interleaved together in thick sheets.


The sheets are bonded together using heat and pressure. Since OSB is produced in large, continuous mats, it's a solid-panel product of consistent quality with few voids or gaps.

    Characteristics of OSB and how to detect and purchase them
    1. Look at the flatness. OSB of good quality have a smooth surface and no unevenness.
    2. Look at the wood grain. Inferior OSB are dark yellow and have fuzzy surface texture. After the board is cut, it is full of stubble.
    The surface texture of high-quality OSB is clear and shiny.
    3. Look at the hardness. OSB is also called oriented strand board. Premium materials provide a tight fit.
    Inferior OSB are very loose according to visual inspection. The quality can also be seen.
    Fourth, look at environmental testing. These exposed OSB are most likely one of the culprits of your home's excessive environmental protection. The environmental testing of materials must meet the national E1 level standard before they can be used with confidence.
